What is Perfection anyways?
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines Perfection as, “the quality or state of being perfect: such as freedom from fault or defect…”
But what does the Word Perfect Mean?
That same dictionary defines the word Perfect as, “having no mistakes or flaws. Can someone however truly be without a flaw? I started to think about the meaning behind the concept of this word upon reading a quote that my sister gave me. The quote reads, “Don’t get caught up chasing perfection and end up missing your blessing.” As I read the words of that quote I started to envision how much we(me included) put into trying to be a perfect person or trying to live a ‘perfect’ life rather than striving to BE THE BEST US WE CAN BE. We try to look like or live life like the persons we may see on TV or on Social Media that are portrayed by those same mediums as being “perfect”. Is the image that is portrayed as being perfect on those mediums even real?
The Objectivity vs Subjectivity of Perfection
Objectivity speaks to the quality of being without bias or prejudice while subjectivity speaks to the quality of being based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes or opinions. How then can we say that the word Perfection is real if it’s not based on facts but purely on persons opinions and likes? Sometimes we use our own opinion to judge a person and conclude that they have the ‘total package’. What may be the ‘total package’ to you, however, may not be the ‘total package’ to me and therefore that proves that perfection is based on subjectivity. You decide what you view as being a perfect look or a perfect life. Our thought process and what we envision in our minds is what we believe to be perfect. There are no written rules stating that if it is that you don’t look a certain way or have a certain life that you are not perfect and there are no rules that state that if you do that you are.
Is striving for Perfection a Good or Bad Thing?
This blog is solely on opinion first of all. So if you have another view I would love to hear from you in the comment section below. To me why strive for perfection or to be flawless when you can just strive to be the best YOU there is. The best “YOU” there is doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to be flawless and live a flawless life. The term means that you try to BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE rather than BE THE BEST THAT THEY WANT YOU TO BE. No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes. I don’t believe that we should beat ourselves up if we see others living what ‘seems’ to be a perfect life and we are not. Like my Grandmother used to say, “All that Glitters Isn’t Gold”. What may be portrayed as perfect on the outside may only be a facade to cover up the imperfections. What we should do is rather than strive to be perfect strive to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.
